The Los Angeles Conservancy Modern Committee presented the annual Modern Masters awards at a ceremony inside the landmark Department of Water and Power building in downtown Los Angeles on December 17th. Recipients of the awards were architect W.A. Sarmiento, who worked with the group to save his 1959 Glendale Federal Savings, and Fidelity Federal Savings buildings in Glendale. Claremont artist Betty Davenport Ford, who collaborated with Millard Sheets creating sculptures for his series of Home Savings buildings, and landscape architect Howard Troller, whose firm Cornell, Bridgers and Troller created iconic parks, public spaces, universities and the L.A. Mall, featuring Joseph Young’s Triforium sculpture. Sarmiento and Ford attended the party, while Troller was unable to join us, with family accepting in his place.
